Leadership Load

The founder transition and the weight that comes with it

Estimated 2 minute readFor chief executives2 sources

Moving from founder led decisions to shared authority requires explicit boundaries. A new title alone does not transfer the load.

The performance question

A founder may appoint an executive team yet remain the informal approver of hiring, product and customer exceptions. Colleagues then serve two systems: the formal chart and the founder’s intervention. Clarify which decisions transfer, which remain reserved and how disagreements will be resolved.

What the evidence supports

HSE’s Role standard addresses conflicting responsibilities. FRC principles on division of responsibilities and succession offer a governance reference, although the Code is not a universal requirement for private founder businesses.[1][2]

A practical approach

Write down reserved decisions and delegated limits with the board and incoming leaders. Introduce those leaders to key relationships and stop routinely reversing decisions made within agreed authority. Give the founder a defined role in strategy or specialist work, with a clear escalation route rather than continuous operational access.

How to review progress

Track decisions returning to the founder, conflicting instructions and delays while teams seek informal approval. Review the arrangements with both parties. Where the founder cannot release a responsibility, adjust the formal structure honestly instead of leaving a deputy accountable without real authority.
